Take five oil change discounts1/16/2024 I think you just have a really poor estimate of timing in your head, and what feels like 10 minutes to you is actually more like 30+ if you had a stop watch. From the time the car pulls on to the lift to the time the barrel is full of old oil takes more than 10-20 minutes and thats not with any shenanigans, thats just realistic time from sequence of events. Costs $15.68 for 5 gallons of full synthetic and that's not factoring in gift cards, cash back, coupons, etc.Īt the end of the day, it's your time and money. Just how much do you think full synthetic costs? My van takes 5w-20. Minimal mess if you buy the right drain container (the carry-style ones are best). There's no fuss with OEM oil filters which is all I ever use for any of my cars. Waited about 5 minutes for the oil to cool down enough (I have a high heat tolerance) and did an oil change in about 30 minutes and that was taking my VERY sweet time. One time I got home from a 300 mile trip. I've seen people do car maintenance wherever they can do it. I do have a hydraulic jack but I don't need it for oil changes. I don't need to jack up my car to reach the pan and filter. I prefer to know the quality of the work, what goes into my car, and saving time and money. You're clearly talking yourself out of it which is perfectly fine. But.Īside from the fact that you forgot about properly lifting the car to get underneath it (ramps and jack stands cost money), whether your living space allows for such operations (try doing an oil change in a parking garage), the total time investment is probably more like over 2 hours of your day from start to finish, plus the potential for mess, plus the aggrevation of fussy oil filters, etc etc. This SHOULD be raising red flags for you if it's taking them longer than the time I mentioned. It takes longer than that for a mechanic to do it once they have your car on a full blown lift. Sorry but my personal time and frustration levels arent worth worrying about a trivial $30 savings I wont see until the summer of 2021 Assuming you buy full synthetic and get 6 months of life out of it, that means over 2 years before you see one single penny in saved costs. Ultimatley the breakeven point from a purely cost perspective doesnt show up till probably 4 or 5 oil changes are performed. How are you going to do it faster than them? Aside from the fact that you forgot about properly lifting the car to get underneath it (ramps and jack stands cost money), whether your living space allows for such operations (try doing an oil change in a parking garage), the total time investment is probably more like over 2 hours of your day from start to finish, plus the potential for mess, plus the aggrevation of fussy oil filters, etc etc. Lol it doesnt take 10-20 minutes to do an oil change. I can definitely see this working on someone that doesn't know much about their car. The way he explained it when he was trying to push the unneeded service was clearly rehearsed. It would also tell me if it was low, fuck being empty.īe careful out there. Did he really not think I would know if my reservoir was empty? My fucking car would be over heating with how much I drive. He can clearly see I have a newer car with lots of options and aftermarket work. I just can't believe this dude would try to pull that shady shit on me. Pulled in, said I need an oil change, they started, asked if I could get out and stretch since I've been in my car all morning, yes but you have to leave the shop floor (that's weird but okay), walk outside, jackass calls me over to my car, says the coolant reservoir is empty and attempts to upsell me on a coolant flush, I decline, everything goes smooth after this, after my car is safely away from these crooks and I'm about to pull out, I tell the dude I know this scam and I'm going to report them to the BBB.
